Have you ever been embarrassed by having sweat stains on your armpits or back due to excessive sweating? Sweating in normal amounts is usual for everyone. But some people sweat so much that it is visible to others and makes the person feel uncomfortable all the time. This is because you are probably suffering from a condition known as hyperhidrosis.

Hyperhidrosis is a common medical condition that affects millions of people worldwide. To feel better, you can read these causes and possible treatments so that you know better about this condition. If you are bothered by this condition, woodmere comprehensive dermatology will help you get the best treatment!

    Types of Hyperhidrosis

There are two types of hyperhidrosis:

    • Primary Focal Hyperhidrosis

This type of hyperhidrosis affects only some specific areas of the body, such as your palms, soles, underarms, or face. Primary focal hyperhidrosis generally starts as an adolescent and can also be hereditary.

    • Secondary Generalized Hyperhidrosis

If your body sweats excessively throughout, it means you have secondary generalized hyperhidrosis. It is usually caused by an underlying medical condition you might have, or it may also be a side effect of certain medications.

    Causes of Hyperhidrosis

The exact cause of primary focal hyperhidrosis is not known yet, but it is believed that it is caused due to overactive sweat glands. Genetic factors may also be a factor, as the condition often runs in families. If you feel you are suffering from secondary generalized hyperhidrosis, check out these causes:

    • Medical Conditions

Certain medical conditions such as diabetes, thyroid problems, menopause, and obesity can cause secondary generalized hyperhidrosis.

    • Medications

Some medications you take for other medical conditions can cause excessive sweating as a side effect.

    • Hormonal Changes

Fluctuation in the hormones in your body during pregnancy or menopause can cause increased sweating.

    • Emotional Factors

Stress, anxiety, and emotional arousal can stimulate the sweat glands, which, as you guessed, leads to excessive sweating.

    Treatment Options for Hyperhidrosis

You absolutely need not worry about the treatment options, as there are plenty! Take a look at these options and try the ones you feel are best for you:

    • Use antiperspirants and deodorants! Yes, as normal as they sound, they actually help. These body sprays seal off the sweat glands in your body, thus preventing the excessive secretion of sweat.
    • Take more showers, and clean yourself properly. This might not seem effective, but it helps mildly.
    • Wear light clothing that lets your body breathe! Try to wear more cotton clothes than synthetic clothes as it absorbs sweat and makes you feel better.
