4 Teeth-brushing Mistakes You Should Avoid

One of the reliable ways you can avoid numerous problems affecting your teeth and gums is by keeping them hygienically clean. That is why teeth cleaning is one of the main general dentistry Cooper City services. Your doctor recommends you should have two dental checkups annually.

Professional teeth cleaning can assist in the removal of particles of food, microbes, or plaque that regular brushing leaves in your mouth.

Still, you can adopt healthy habits that ensure you keep your oral health to the required standards. That can help reduce the required dental checkups and the need for specialist teeth cleaning.

Moreover, healthy oral hygiene practices can eliminate or minimize your need for other dental services like root canals and dental prosthetics. Below are brushing mistakes you can avoid to benefit from healthier oral hygiene.

    1. Use of a toothbrush for an extended period

You need to replace your manual toothbrush after every three or four months. If you are using an electric toothbrush, it should be replaced sooner, especially before the end of one or three years.

Replace your toothbrush if the bristles are frayed and are no longer flexible. For instance, worn-out bristles of your toothbrush can hurt your gum tissues and tooth enamel. Replace your toothbrush if you brush regularly and still your teeth feel fuzzy or have bad breath.

    2. Brushing the teeth for a short time

Studies done by oral health experts have established that brushing your mouth for about two minutes is necessary to maintain proper hygiene. The American Dental Association reports that an average American brushes the mouth for about 44 seconds.

Brushing your mouth for less than two minutes can prevent you from eliminating most food debris and microbes. Moreover, brushing for the recommended minutes is vital to provide your toothpaste enough time to spread, work, and kill germs.

Avoid cleaning your mouth with water after brushing. Water can reduce fluoride concentration in your mouth and thus reduce its effectiveness. Instead of using water for rinsing your teeth and gums, use a specially formulated solution or a mouthwash.

    3. Storing toothbrushes in the toilet or bathroom

In most households, toothbrushes are commonly placed in the toilet or bathroom. Keep your toothbrush away from the areas of the bathroom or toilet because those rooms are unclean most of the time. Tiny dirt and bacteria can invade your toothbrush; hence, you might unknowingly move them to your mouth as you brush.

Even if you store your toothbrush in a clean environment, ensure it has a cover so it does not attract fine dust and micro-organisms.

    4. Avoiding tongue cleaning

Your tongue also plays a great responsibility in handling the food in your mouth. As a result, bacteria can breed and multiply on the surface of your tongue. Food particles can also stick to the tongue’s surface.

Other unhealthy oral habits you should refrain from are brushing several times daily and using incorrect brushing techniques. Brushing more than twice daily increases the possibility of inflaming your gums and damaging your enamel.
