Scoliosis is a typical spine complication impacting some people in the United States. While it is not threatening, it may be annoying due to the pain it can yield. Thankfully, several Altoona scoliosis management procedures are available to help you improve your symptoms.

If you suspect a twisted and curved spine, it is time to turn things around. However, knowing the one that suits you may be difficult if you are familiar with them. Here are five treatments your doctor can recommend to manage your scoliosis.

    Bracing

Bracing has gained massive popularity, such that numerous individuals relate it with scoliosis. Scoliosis is the lateral curving of your spine by 10 degrees or more. When the curve is below 20 degrees, your physician suggests observation and pause to check if the patient’s condition deteriorates.

The unique type of brace needed varies depending on your physician’s suggestion. Besides, it will depend on the patient’s spinal curvature and age. You should not worry about braces as they are more comfortable than traditional ones.

    Physical Therapy

If your kid is encountering pain and discomfort due to the spine’s curvature, your provider can suggest traditional therapy. The physical therapist’s aim will involve strengthening the kid’s back and leg muscles. Also, they will work to evade injury and surge flexibility.

The psychiatrist may apply general flexibility strategies or try manual therapy. The therapist’s hands will guide and reeducate the patient’s movements. While this procedure does not rectify the curvature, it can reduce the kid’s pain and discomfort.

    Bodyweight Exercises

With impaired curvature, carrying out activities such as running becomes bothersome. Bodyweight exercises are integral in alleviating discomfort and fostering more unrestricted movement. However, these exercises do not cure your condition but aim at enhancing poor curvature.

Fortunately, if you do these exercises well, you will get used to it. They will keep your back and core strong, enabling you to carry out activities easily. You should, however, work closely with your doctor to know the most effective procedure to embrace, as some can worsen your condition.

    Schroth Method

The Schroth method is effective for kids with various types of spinal curves. This technique is the only type of therapy that enhances curvature. Your therapist will describe conducting a series of breathing, strengthening, and stretching exercises.

You will learn how to do the exercises in five positions: sitting, lying on the back, lying on each side, on knees and hands, and when standing. Schroth exercises are customized to achieve the treatment requirements of every kid. This procedure becomes more effective as your child grows.

    Surgery for Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis

Individuals with curves which gradually go beyond 50 degrees with or without bracing need surgical intervention. Your provider can recommend different surgical methods like posterior spinal fusion. During the procedure, your surgeon makes incisions from the back and combines the vertebrae.

The surgeon applies bone chips made of autograft or allograft taken from the patient’s body or a donor, respectively. The specialist holds the spine in alignment with screws or hooks. The implant does not play any role, although they are left behind to prevent the need for another surgery.

Scoliosis worsens with time, and if left untreated, it can cause permanent deformity. These issues may be resistance to conservative treatments like medications and might only require surgery. Therefore, considering scoliosis treatment early should be your priority.

Your doctor will conduct a physical examination to confirm if you have a curved spine. Afterward, your provider will suggest the treatment that suits you, depending on the severity of the condition and your preferences. If done correctly, it will reduce pain and discomfort, allowing you to live a healthy, happy life.
